We saw you performing as a vocalist and guitarist last year at Coke Studio, which is the most prominent music platform in the country. Why did you feel that this was the best vehicle to make your musical debut? And why did “Muntazir” feel like the best song to present to listeners?

Danyal: As you just mentioned, it is the most prominent music platform in the country! It allows you to express yourself in front of the entire country, and not only that, Coke Studio also has a huge international following! I don’t think it is an opportunity that no one can pass up, since you have the opportunity to show your talent in front of millions of people.

“Muntazir” was in my alley at the time. In those days, I was trying to figure out what sound it would make for my own music, and pop rock and soft rock were really taking the lead. It’s like they say, when you are working towards something, the universe starts aligning you with it. And ‘Muntazir’ happened! It was like a breath of fresh air, although it had hints of a classical string melody, but I felt connected to it.

You also worked with Ali on the music for the movie Teefa in Trouble, which is a huge box office hit. Congratulations on the success of the movie! How was the experience of working on the soundtrack? And how different was it to record your own songs for your debut album?

Danyal: Thank you! Until this movie, we had worked so hard together that we had this workflow between us without having to say much. This is how the songs came about: we would discuss everything once and just get down to business. And whatever we did first would be just that. There were no songs that have been removed or reworked! But of course the music was based on movies, so the experience was different, so we had to align ourselves with the situations in the movie, but when I saw the final product, everything worked out perfectly. It was the way we imagined everything!

When I work in isolation, not only the thinking and focus, but even the process is very different for me. That’s because my sound is very different from his. Aside from the fact that the music in the movie was situational, and the album was just music itself, my way of writing, structuring the song, deciphering the sound, everything was completely different in every way.

Speaking of your own music, you plan to release your first album, Ek Aur Ek 3, soon. What can you tell us about the album?

Danyal: Well, I have put my blood and sweat. I have produced most of the tracks myself. It took me a long time to figure out how I wanted the album to turn out; Many songs were discarded, many were added, many things were completely changed in their production. Here’s how it happened: I kept going to the studio for about eight to nine months and did a new song almost every day. I kept doing song after song, and when I felt like I couldn’t or was monotonous, I stopped. And because of what he had done, I picked the best batch and decided to go out with him. And it’s not like I’m going to drop all the songs together in one day; Albums in Pakistan don’t work that way, unfortunately. They will be released with 2-3 months interval between each song so that each song gets its recognition. Still, I chose to have them be part of an album because they are songs that I did at one stage; I want them to also be considered a “phase”, hence the album.

You’re going to release the title song “Ek Aur Ek 3” as the first single. How would you describe the song?

Danyal: All I can say is that it is a mix of blues, R&B and funk fused with our traditional and cultural musical elements. I’ve tried doing something experimental so I don’t want to reveal too much. But there is definitely a surprise to look forward to!

You also have acting aspirations. Any project in process on that front?

Danyal: As of now, none. I’m trying to focus on music as much as possible and channel my energy in one direction.

What kind of music do you listen to? Who are some of your favorite artists?

Danyal: I listen to everything. I have never looked at music in genres. However, I’m always in the mood for blues, funk, R&B, laid-back, psychedelic rock. I’ve discovered some lo-fi stuff these days, so I really liked it. My favorites are John Mayer, Pink Floyd and Jeff Buckley.

And who are your favorite actors?

Danyal: Favorite actors are Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Adrien Brody, Robert De Niro, Margot Robbie, Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron, and Helena Bonham Carter.

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your spare time (assuming you have one)?

Danyal: Oh man, I’m a fan of games! I play Counter-Strike 1.6 on LAN with my friends like mad. Overnight stays maybe every weekend, sometimes even every 2-3 days. I’ve wasted a lot of time playing games and I’m not even ashamed of it!

What can we expect from you in the coming months?

Danyal: Lots, lots, lots of music!
