Dutch government resigns over childcare subsidies scandal
The government of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte jointly resigned on Friday over its mismanagement of childcare subsidies, the national broadcaster NOS reported.
Rutte would inform King Willem-Alexander of the decision and hold a press conference later on Friday.
The decision follows a parliamentary inquiry last month in which it was found that bureaucrats at the tax service, under the supervision of the government, had driven thousands of families to financial ruin with illegal accusations of fraud.
The investigation report said about 10,000 families were illegally forced to repay tens of thousands of euros in subsidies, leading to unemployment, bankruptcies and divorces. It describes such mismanagement over a decade as an “unprecedented injustice”.
