The nation woke up to a tragic story of the Indian fighting fraternity. Ritika Phogat, Geeta and Babita Phogat’s 17-year-old maternal cousin, reportedly committed suicide. The youngster reportedly took this drastic step after losing the final match of a wrestling tournament.

Media reports claim that Ritika participated in the state level sub-junior women’s and men’s wrestling competition in Bharatpur, which took place between March 12 and 14.

According to sources informed News 18, Ritika Phogat lost the final match played on March 14 by just one point. The young fighter was in shock after the defeat, Ritika could not bear the shame so she took the extreme step of ending her life. Around 11 p.m., Ritika hanged herself and said heavenly goodbye. Ritika Phogat was the maternal sister of Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat.

Sources added that Dronacharya Awardee Mahavir Singh Phogat was also present during the fighting tournament. He had trained Ritika Phogat, and she was a student at the Mahavir Phogat Sports Academy.

Police said 17-year-old Ritika Phogat was believed to be upset about narrowly missing a final in a wrestling tournament. She had participated in a state level competition in Bharatpur in Rajasthan between March 12-14.

“Ritika, a wrestler and cousin of Babita Phogat, was allegedly killed by suicide on March 17. The reason could have been her loss in a recent wrestling tournament in Rajasthan. Investigations are ongoing,” Ram Singh Bishnoi, Deputy Superintendent of policeman, Charkhi Dadri, told the ANI news agency. According to the police, she was depressed about losing the final by one point.

She was found dead in the home of her uncle and legendary wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat on Monday night. Ritika had trained with Mahavir Phogat, a Dronacharya award winner who runs a sports academy. Geeta Phogat’s post reflected the family’s shock and grief.
