Origin of HFPA:

Eligibility to join HFPA:

Journalists must live in Southern California and have reported on the film industry for a news outlet based outside of the United States for at least three years. Each candidate must have at least two current members sponsoring their application. Any current member can also veto the request directly. Once a member, the journalist, in theory, must produce at least six articles or broadcast pieces per year to remain an active member. Members also get privileges like access to exclusive press conferences and screenings. Scholars are also interested in making sure HFPA members have seen their movies and TV shows. Most of the members are correspondents who work regularly for well-known media outlets such as Le Figaro from France, El País from Spain or the Daily Mail from Great Britain.
