After international pop star Rihanna took to Twitter on Wednesday with her tweet about the Indian Farmers’ Protest, there was an unprecedented deluge of international support for the farmers on the micro-blog site.
Activists as well as celebrities tweeted in favor of the protesting farmers, making the hashtag #FarmersProtest a worldwide trend on Twitter with an estimated 1.02 million tweets. The trend begins when Rihanna asks, ‘Why don’t we talk about this? #FarmersProtest, ”with a link to a CNN article on the growing situation in New Delhi.
The article in question reported on the tactics of the Modi government to suspend internet services in a major protest action. The government has blocked internet services at three protest sites near Delhi borders.
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg also supported the farmers by sharing the same CNN story as Rihanna, saying: “We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India.”
Popular YouTuber Lilly Singh also ushered in and tweeted Rihanna’s tweet with the caption: “Yes! Thank you very much. It’s a humanity issue!” She also calls it a ‘humanity issue’ and adds the hashtag #IStandWithFarmers.
