The film has been available for screening at the 93rd Academy Awards, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score and other categories, and was included in the list of 366 films eligible for nomination.

The film was inspired in part by events in the life of Simplify Deccan founder G. R. Gopinath. While the project was announced in mid-2018, under the provisional title Suriya 38, the official title Soorarai Pottru was announced on April 13, 2019. Principal photography began the same month and ended in September. Filming took place in Madurai, Chennai, and Chandigarh. The film features music composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, while cinematography and editing were handled by Niketh Bommireddy and Sathish Suriya respectively.

The movie’s theatrical release suffered due to post-production delays and the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was released digitally via Amazon Prime Video on November 12, 2020, coinciding with the eve of the Diwali festival. It was released simultaneously with its versions dubbed in Kannada and Malayalam under the same title and in Telugu as Aakasam Nee Haddu Raa (translated. The sky is the limit). The film received positive reviews from critics, praising the main technical aspects of the film, also appreciating Suriya’s acting and Sudha’s direction.
