The film was inspired in part by events in the life of Simplify Deccan founder G. R. Gopinath. While the project was announced in mid-2018, under the provisional title Suriya 38, the official title Soorarai Pottru was announced on April 13, 2019. The movie’s theatrical release suffered due to post-production delays and the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was released digitally via Amazon Prime Video on November 12, 2020, coinciding with the eve of the Diwali festival. It was released simultaneously with its versions dubbed in Kannada and Malayalam under the same title and in Telugu as Aakasam Nee Haddu Raa (translated. The sky is the limit). The film received positive reviews from critics, praising the main technical aspects of the film, also appreciating Suriya’s acting and Sudha’s direction.
