We Can Be Heroes is an upcoming American superhero film written, directed and cinematography by Robert Rodriguez, serving as a stand-alone sequel to The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D (2005).

The film stars Priyanka Chopra, Pedro Pascal, YaYa Gosselin, Boyd Holbrook, Sung Kang, Taylor Dooley, and Christian Slater.

Missy Moreno witnesses Miracle Guy battling against an unknown alien force from another planet, until he loses his powers and can barely has enough energy.

Marcus, her father tells her about the superhero and decided to go to work, but is secretly out saving the city. Her grandmother Marie Moreno explains to Missy that her father would come back eventually.

More aliens arrived to destroy the city, Marcus joins in with his friends Tech-No, Red Lightening Fury, Lavagirl, Sharkboy, Miracle Guy, Ms. Vox, Kung-Fu Man, and Crimson Legend. The superheroes got captured by the alien leader Vorgo.

The kids were then taken to facility where all superpowered people were being restrained in. It was lead by Ms. Granada. They knew about the history of the superheroes and decided to escape. Guppy leads the group.

At Vorgo’s temple, the superheroes were both detained in a room filled with scientific experiments. The kids then sneaked into Missy’s house and noticed Marcus’ jet. They got in and were blasted off into space.

Ms. Granada notices their absence and sends her superiors to form a search for them. In the detaining room, Sharkboy and Lavagirl managed to locate a safe place from the here. The kids followed the path to the temple and realized that it only takes 5 hours to find them.

Meanwhile, Ms. Granada contacts with her agents about their location and takes her jet with. The kids arrived to the first planet called Singland where Canary resides in.

They faced several canaries that tried to abduct them. Then they come across the second planet called Planet Drool where Guppy and Bubblegum resides in.

The superheroes walked through a secret room where they encountered a security camera of what Vorgo’s capable of when an unknown shadowy figure has given him a potion. When they tried finding information on who it is, the info page is suddenly blocked.

On the third planet called Yonpog where Crushing Low, a superhero who is trapped in the planet, gives them advice on how to get to Vorgo’s temple. The kids walked with the map from the fourth planet called Krooa. The superheroes then get locked up again in cages.

The kids then made it to Vorgo’s temple. Missy bursts into the throne room and demands to Vorgo where her dad was. Vorgo refuses to speak. Ms. Granada then comes in, revealing that her superior is Vorgo.

She is also revealed to powers herself, which is the ability to trap everyone in powerful cages. She was about destroy all the other planets, but she ended up weakening and has been imprisoned in her own cage.

The kids and the superheroes escape from Ms. Granada’s cages and both fight off Vorgo’s guards and trainees. Missy eventually stops the fight by ordering Vorgo to stop all the madness and just find kindness. Vorgo who listens to Missy brings the superheroes their powers back.

They kids and their parents reunite and they choose to find another way to earn every person kindness by finding more group of kids with superpowers. The kids eventually become a team called Hero Force.

J.J. Dashnaw appears as a stand-in body double for Sharkboy. Dashnaw’s appearance is a silent cameo, where the character’s face is obscured by a mask, due to Taylor Lautner, who portrayed the character in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, being unavailable to film the scenes in which the character appears, thus allowing for Lautner to potentially return in a future film.

Robert Rodriguez will write, direct, and produce the superhero film We Can Be Heroes through his Troublemaker Studios for Netflix.


Priyanka Chopra will star in the film, along with Christian Slater and Pedro Pascal.


Principal photography began in August 2019, shooting in Texas.

It is scheduled to be released on December 25, 2020, pushed forward from a January 1, 2021 release date.
