Who was Gangubai Kathiawadi?
As revealed in the books and details available on the internet, Gangubai was born in Kathiawad (Gujarat) in 1939. Her real name was Ganga Harivandas and she came from a family of lawyers with very conservative beliefs. She was the only child of her parents and had completed her studies at a local government school. From her teens, she was bent on the bright world of acting. She wanted to pursue a career in Bollywood and without knowing much about the world of glamor, she left her family. Leaving her family uninformed of her, she took enough money and jewelry only to find herself embroiled in new trouble.
After she left her home, one of her father’s employees helped her to get to Mumbai. Upon reaching the city of her dreams, he realized that it was a different world from her imagination and her survival became a challenge for her. She fell in love with and married Ramnik Lal (the clerk) only to be abandoned by him. Making false promises, her husband sold her to a brothel and pushed her into the prostitution business at a young age. She was sold in Kamathipura for a mere amount of Rs. 500. Alia Bhatt will star in the next film featuring Emraan Hashmi as her husband and the shadows of her characters would be inspired by Hussain Zaidi’s book.
Gangubai initially did not want to be a prostitute, however she considered staying in Kamathipura because she believed that her family would not accept her. After living a few weeks without hope, she soon became one of the most prized prostitutes. Her clients included big name personalities and people from the mob world. Her ability to make her clients wealthy made her famous and she soon gained power within her workspace. During the 1960s, with the increasing popularity of her, Gangubai became the owner of many brothels in Kamathipura, as mentioned in Hussain Zaidi’s book. However, she apparently did not allow women to be unwilling to pursue that profession.
How did Karim Lala become Gangubai Kathiawadi’s Rakhi brother?
After Gangubai Kathiawadi became a household name within her brothels, she found herself embroiled in much bigger trouble. As mentioned in the book, a notorious gangster forced her twice and that left her feeling invalid for a few days. This leads her to her then renowned gift of hers, Karim Lala. By discussing the matter with him, she made him her brother, her Rakhi. This made her even more powerful in Kamathipura and before long she was synonymous with rich people. Reportedly, she would wear saree made with gold trim and also had expensive cars. On the other hand, Lala keeping her promise protected her from gangsters and people who would annoy her.
In no time, Gangubai became the queen of the mafia in Mumbai. After gaining power, fame, and money, she dedicated her life to helping the children in her community. She reportedly worked to achieve justice for young prostitutes and worked on the development of people living in brothels.
